Blog three - chosen practitioner

Image
During this week, our group researched different choreographic practitioners to get inspiration for our own choreography. We focused on Crystal Pite, who is known for creating pieces that revolve around challenging and complex themes within modern-day society. Her style was a perfect fit for our own piece, which also deals with similar themes.   ( Company – kidd pivot ) We watched a piece created by Pite called ‘The St atement’ which explores the use of physical theat re – where physical movements are used as the main way of storytelling ( What is Physical Theatre? - acting tips: City Academy guides 2021) . This piece takes the format of a play, where four dancers engage in a heated conversation around a table using physical theatre. ( Performing arts: Paris ) From this, w e created a phrase inspired by 'The Statement' and used a quote (pictured below) as our script for physical theatre movements.   Using physical theatre in our choreography was a new technique for us h...

Blog two - stimulus and music

This week, we formed groups and selected our stimulus for the choreography. Initially, we thought of basing our performance on the TV show called "The Traitors." It is a psychological and competitive reality game of "trust and treachery," where 22 strangers, known as the Faithfuls, live in a castle, working together in the hope of winning the prize money. However, there are traitors among them who aim to eliminate the Faithfuls and claim the prize money for themselves.   ( The traitors ) The show explores themes of deception and false identity within social interaction s. This led us to think about the modern ‘human condition’ and what it means to be human within society today , referring to the shared experiences, emotions and challenges we all share . (Practical Psychology, 2023) We believe that the topic we are focusing on is relevant in today's society , as it is portrayed in popular TV shows such as The Traitors and Big Brother. Understanding what make...

Blog one - choreographic tasks

Image
This week, we began exploring various methods to generate movement to assist our group choreography project. We partnered up to complete two tasks.   During our first task, we selected a random image from our camera roll as a stimulus and started annotating it with different themes and ideas. The image we chose was a plate of spaghetti (pictured below), which I thought was quite random and not something I would usually pick. We began by focusing on the visual aspects of the spaghetti, such as its long, flowing strands, which inspired us to create movements that reflected this quality. We also took inspiration from the colors on the plate, such as the beige pasta and dark green salad, which led us to explore contrasts in our movements, such as using different levels and sharper motions. While this method of creating movement from a random image was unique, I don't think it provides a strong starting point for further research from an academic perspective.   (Ryalls, 2023) D...
