Blog three - chosen practitioner

During this week, our group researched different choreographic practitioners to get inspiration for our own choreography. We focused on Crystal Pite, who is known for creating pieces that revolve around challenging and complex themes within modern-day society. Her style was a perfect fit for our own piece, which also deals with similar themes. (Company – kidd pivot) We watched a piece created by Pite called ‘The Statement’ which explores the use of physical theatre – where physical movements are used as the main way of storytelling (What is Physical Theatre? - acting tips: City Academy guides 2021). This piece takes the format of a play, where four dancers engage in a heated conversation around a table using physical theatre. (Performing arts: Paris) From this, we created a phrase inspired by 'The Statement' and used a quote (pictured below) as our script for physical theatre movements.

Using physical theatre in our choreography was a new technique for us however, as a group, we found it helpful in the creative process and believe it would be beneficial to incorporate in our final piece.
