Blog one - choreographic tasks
This week, we began exploring various methods to generate movement to assist our group choreography project. We partnered up to complete two tasks.
During our first task, we selected a random image from our camera roll as a stimulus and started annotating it with different themes and ideas. The image we chose was a plate of spaghetti (pictured below), which I thought was quite random and not something I would usually pick. We began by focusing on the visual aspects of the spaghetti, such as its long, flowing strands, which inspired us to create movements that reflected this quality. We also took inspiration from the colors on the plate, such as the beige pasta and dark green salad, which led us to explore contrasts in our movements, such as using different levels and sharper motions. While this method of creating movement from a random image was unique, I don't think it provides a strong starting point for further research from an academic perspective.
During the second task, we used the 'chance method' to create movement by randomly picking words from a book and forming a short list. The list consisted of a random mixture of words such as stupid, appears, piece, years and February. I found this task more challenging than the previous one where we used a photo stimulus because the words were more abstract and harder to attach a movement to that represents them well. This task required me to think more creatively as the 'chance method' was more restrictive when associating movements with words compared to associating them with an image.
