Blog 9 - evaluation

Now that we have completed our final piece, we can reflect on the creative process as a whole and evaluate if we have achieved our original goals. Initially, we aimed to focus on society and social constructs, including how diverse individuals fit into society and the human condition as a whole. Starting from our stimulus, the TV show "The Traitors," we have expanded our scope to analyze different aspects of society, which we then broke down into various sections in our piece. We drew inspiration from Crystal Pite's practitioner study and incorporated her use of duets as well as her focus on modern-day issues within society, making our work relevant to all audiences. Additionally, we studied "The Statement" and included physical theatre in our work, which effectively conveyed our message. Our piece explores how themes such as power, greed, and wealth impact an individual's role within society, making it comparable to "The Statement" and relevant in the modern-day world.

In our piece, we plan to use props to better embody the characters and convey the message more clearly. For instance, we will wear a blazer to represent the 'businessman' character in one section and pass around a hat throughout the piece. The structure of our piece is cyclical, as it ends the same way as it starts - with me portraying the 'male figure' and the other three girls representing the various themes and sections of our performance.

Based on the recent experience, I believe that we as a team need to improve our organizational and productive skills when creating choreography. Towards the end, there was a lot of content to cover in a short period of time, which resulted in less time for refining smaller details and polishing the piece. However, I don’t feel like we have rushed the choreography as I think we have been smart in terms of everything we have done represents a specific section within the piece.

Throughout the process, I have found it challenging as it pushed me out of my comfort zone to try a new style that I'm not used to, which made me feel self-conscious and uncomfortable at times. Additionally, I struggled to contribute many choreographic ideas to the group as I was unfamiliar with this style and what movements would work. Nevertheless, I recognize this experience as valuable because there will be times within the industry when working with a choreographer where one may feel uncomfortable; therefore, this experience provided me with an opportunity to learn.
